What to Expect During the First 72 Hours

Most patients return to normal daily activity within 1 to 2 days after a simple extraction and within 3 to 5 days after a surgical one.
Eat soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup broth, and eggs for the first 24 to 48 hours. Avoid hot liquids, carbonated beverages, and anything that requires forceful suction, including straws, for the first 72 hours. Keep hard, crunchy, or chewy foods away from the extraction side until your follow-up confirms that healing is on track.
Avoid strenuous physical activity for 24 hours after the procedure. Do not smoke or use any tobacco products during healing because they significantly increase your risk of dry socket. Skip vigorous rinsing on the first day, but gentle saltwater rinses can start 24 hours after the procedure.
Call us right away if you experience increasing pain after the first 48 hours, visible bone in the socket, fever, unusual swelling, or prolonged bleeding that does not slow with gentle pressure. These may indicate dry socket or infection, and both are treatable when caught early.
